Learners’ Dictionary as a Medium for Inter-lingual Communication

The compilation and use of learners’ dictionaries are closely related to L2 teaching and learning. To enhance interaction between lexicographers and L2 teachers and researchers, the Bilingual Committee of the Lexicographical Society of China (ChinaLex) decided in October 2010 that the 3rd International Symposium on Lexicography and L2 Teaching and Learning be held in Xi’an on October 20-22, 2012.
Owing to the wide use of computers and the internet as well as the rapid development of transportation, mass media and telecom technology, human communication has undergone great changes in recent decades. Inter-lingual communication has become more common and the L2 teaching and learning has been in booming. The dictionary, as an important vehicle for language learning, civilization inheriting, and culture transmitting, has also seen an unprecedented flourishing. Lexicography has developed into an inter-disciplinary subject and dictionary-making an integrated enterprise and industry. Pedagogical lexicography has in the meantime gradually taken the lead in recent years and learners’ dictionary-making has become the main arena in the field.
How can a learners’ dictionary play a more active role in bridging and facilitating the inter-lingual communication? How can dictionary-making for L2 learners benefit from lexicographical studies? How can pedagogical lexicography and general lexicography divide their labor? How can new technologies in NLP, such as computerized language corpora and the internet, be used in making new dictionaries - electronic ones and online ones? How can the various kinds of information be categorized and appropriately presented in a learners’ dictionary? How can a survey be designed to investigate the students’ needs in L2 learning? How can a learners’ dictionary be planned, designed, compiled and published more economically nowadays? How can bilingual dictionary-making draw on the findings of comparative linguistic studies? Can inter-lingual lexicography be dubbed as an independent discipline in lexicography? How can the heritage of dictionary culture be kept intact and passed on in different cultures? With Chinese language teaching and Chinese dictionary-making growing and spreading worldwide with the popularization of Chinese products and Chinese culture, how can Chinese language teaching and dictionary-making learn and benefit from their counterparts in other countries? How can learners’ dictionary-making catch the step of the progress of the world and keep its lead in the field of dictionary-making and researching in the future?
