"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: This two-day workshop organized by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences aims at reviewing some generative studies undertaken primarily on languages in the Indian sub-continent and their take on the questions of architecture and the nature of the interfaces. To this end, we propose to hold four sessions (on features, sem-theta-interface, morpho-phonology interface and experimental linguistics), where experts working on different languages and within different paradigms are invited to talk about their ongoing research and present novel empirical and theoretical observations.
