Temporal, Modal and Event Interpretation in Natural Language Discourse |
Conference URL: http://www.tmei-nld.uac.pt This meeting focuses on how the temporal structure of discourse is built out of linguistic and world knowledge cues, a topic of intense research for the past couple of decades. How do grammatical elements or systems – such as tense, aspect, Aktionsart, auxiliary verbs, lexical predicates (like last or date back to), time adjuncts, and discourse connectives – interact to determine temporal information processing in natural languages? How does world knowledge – in combination with the above-mentioned grammatical elements or systems – affect the semantic interpretation? Furthermore, how does mood/modality interact with temporal information (e.g. in factual, counterfactual or hypothetical structures)? Both language-specific and contrastive studies focusing on these different types of interactions – at the sentence or at the discourse level – are welcome. |
