Big Rapids

Welcome to the only Big Rapids in the United States!

The nature

Back in the day, we were heavy into the logging industry as the Muskegon River was used to move logs across the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The lumberjacks referred to the swift currents at a particular section of the river as 'the big rapids', and that became the city's name.

The Muskegon River inspired the name 'Big Rapids'.

Nowadays we don't have too many lumberjacks, but we got mentioned in National Geographic for our river-rapid tubing, and nearby Stanwood houses a water bottling plant. The river cuts the city in half, and Mecosta County has over 100 lakes where visitors enjoy boating, fishing, swimming, and water skiing.

Tubing
Growing up in Big Rapids, it's tradition to have at least two or three tubing parties every summer.

The city

Big Rapids is the county seat of Mecosta County. Big Rapids was the first city in the county, and continues to be the largest area with a population of 10,849.

Northend Park is a great place to take a walk in the woods or have a picnic.

We're a growing community, but still have the essence of americana. Our historic downtown is a great place to shop at unique boutiques, and the small town has three parks where the locals have picnics, take bike-rides and just play.

Mitchell Creek Park is located in the downtown area, and is a popular hang-out for local teenagers.

The university

Big Rapids is home to Ferris State University, a technical University with a student body of 11,000. The University is in many ways the hub of the community - it provides the most jobs and hosts the most events.
