The LINGUIST List has a bank account in Switzerland which is managed by Pius ten Hacken, a member of The LINGUIST List Advisory Board. He writes:
"The LINGUIST List is based in the USA, but it is not an American list.
Users, both readers and contributors, are based all over the world.
For some of them, making a donation will be difficult because of the hurdles of
the banking system. If you are not paying by credit card, transferring money to the
USA can be very expensive. In order to solve this problem, I have set up a bank account
for The LINGUIST List in Switzerland a couple of years ago.
This bank account can be used for making bank transfers. No charges are involved if you also have a bank account in Switzerland. Otherwise bank charges are usually much lower than for transferring money to the USA directly. By making a large transfer at the end of the fund drive, we can reduce the overall amount lost to bank charges.
In order to reduce bank charges for donations, it might be an idea to pool your donations locally (e.g. among colleagues) and make one transfer. If you use the Swiss bank account for the payment of invoices, please make sure that any bank charges are not substracted from the amount The LINGUIST List receives."

This is the most convenient way to make a donation if
- you do not wish to pay by credit card and
- you do not have a bank account in the USA.
The bank account is meant in principle for bank transfers, not for the processing of checks. Only checks drawn on a U.S. bank can be processed.
Checks should be mailed to:
