Dear Subscribers, My name is Kate Wu, an editor at The LINGUIST List. I started to work for The LINGUIST List as a graduate assist this semester, and it felt like a dream coming true. Being an international student, this is my first time working in the US, which is a valuable experience in my life. I cherish this opportunity and try to hold on to each moment so that I can learn more from the work and from my colleagues. Currently, my editing area is Calls for Papers. At the same time, I am also involved with MultiTree, a project of The LINGUIST List. Before working here, "linguistics" was just a school subject to me. I never imagined what I could really do with it. Now I have come to realize that I am actually able to apply what I have read from the linguistic books to my work field, and it indeed is very encouraging. Through editing, I slowly put the puzzles together to see the big picture of what linguistics is about. The first step toward that will be learning how to classify different topics to the appropriate linguistic subfields. Moreover, as a new member in the MultiTree team, there is so much out there for me to learn. At this point, I'm responsible for uploading the trees into the system. By doing that, different scholarly hypotheses about language families turn into clear and accessible trees with detailed information. The LINGUIST List also provides computational tutorial sessions for all graduate assistants. Thus, people like me who have no programming background, will have the chance to learn some basic computer skills, such as HTML, CSS, ColdFusion, etc. This is very helpful. We then are able to fix small problems on our own during editing or while encountering internet problems. Working in The LINGUIST List broadens my view about linguistics. This gives me more motivation toward both working and studying; I know that what I learn, whether from work or from books, is beneficial. This is all because of you!! Thank you! One of the easiest ways to support us is by donation: https://linguistlist.org/donation/donate/donate1.cfm We, all the graduate assistants, highly appreciate your support of The LINGUIST List. Thank you! Sincerely, Kate Wu Student Editor View Kate's personal page View Kate's hometown tour! |
