Dear Subscribers, I come from a far away land, Indonesia, where more than seven hundred languages live (not includes dialects) and some of them are in the count down to extinction. Before coming to the LINGUIST, I spent almost five years working as a research assistant in the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Jakarta Field Station, doing data collection on children's language acquisition of Jakarta-Indonesian and language documentation of Traditional Betawi Malay. The abundance of languages spoken in Indonesia and my working experiences in the Max Planck Institute inspired me to learn more about linguistics. For this reason, I was looking for a scholarship to pursue my M.A. degree. The LINGUIST List has given me this very valuable opportunity to work as a student editor while studying linguistics in Eastern Michigan University. I am very grateful and proud to be the first Indonesian student who has worked at The LINGUIST List. This is the second year for me working as a student editor and I have gained much valuable knowledge of language technology that I have never learnt before I came to The LINGUIST List. I believe this knowledge is very useful for my future use as a linguist to document and analyze the languages in my country, most of which have not yet been studied. From my experience, finding support for academic purpose is hard to deal with. So I would like to remind you that your contribution to The LINGUIST List not only keeps this enterprise running but will also establish a wide-open opportunity for graduate students like me.
