Dear Subscribers,

First of all, I want to thank you for all of your contributions last year and making this year possible. We are all in your debt for providing us with this wonderful opportunity. We hope that all of you will help us again this year, every little bit helps!

I'm in my second year both at LINGUIST and the M.A. program here at Eastern Michigan University, and it's been an incredible year and a half. LINGUIST is an amazing place to work, both in terms of people and opportunities. Since Eastern has a fairly small linguistics department, my co-workers and I spend our days at work together and our nights together at class. We depend on each other heavily at work, and that spirit of cooperation follows us in the classroom. That interdependence helps us create a very supportive classroom atmosphere. We want to see everyone succeed and we end up encouraging fellow students (LINGUIST Listers or not) to work on projects, present at conferences and to really get involved even if they're relatively new to the field, like I was.

One of the biggest advantages I find working here is not just what you learn about linguistics (the terminology, the subdisciplines...), but what you learn about Linguistics. The LL-MAP team has taught me a lot about the research process. Through that project, I've had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of researchers and their data-- everything from the locations of mountain festivals to native toponyms of Alaska. Being able to talk to the researchers about their work and data has been very helpful for learning how to go about documentation research. I think the most valuable lesson that comes from working at LINGUIST is time management. There is always more work to do here than we can feasibly do in a week. Many of us are balancing our work week, with a full load of graduate classes. On top of this we have projects, applications and the attempts to maintain something of a sleep schedule. You can learn these skills most places, but the fact that our work is seen by over 26,000 of you out there pushes us to strive to do our best work despite the time constraints. We learn to work well under pressure.

As I prepare to leave LINGUIST this coming fall, I know that I will be forever indebted to Helen and Tony, my fellow students here, and all of you out there who make this organization possible. So if you value the services of LINGUIST List and all of our hard work, please take the time to make a donation.
