HISTORY OF CANTON
The township of Canton was created by act of the Michigan Territorial
Legislature in 1834 out of what had been Plymouth Township.
Cherry Hill Village was established at approximately the same time as Sheldon Corners.
It was home to Canton's first church, the United Methodist Church.
Cherry Hill was first known as "The Ridge".
Following the construction of the Cherry Hill House (Ridge and Cherry Hill) the area became known as Cherry Hill.
Cherry Hill remained very much like it was since the early 1800's until it was reestablished as the new Cherry Hill, including;
hundreds of new homes, apartments, condos and commercial buildings.
Cherry Hill is also home to the Village Theater at Cherry Hill Village.
Both the church and school are Michigan State historic sites.
On March 7, 1834 Canton became a Michigan township.
It was named after the city of Canton in China.
The name was chosen for the purpose of not conflicting with the name of any post office in existence at the time.
At the time, there was a territorial law from April 12, 1827, prohibiting the incorporation
of any new township having the same name as any existing post office.
Canton is the only remaining community in Michigan with its original Chinese name.

SUMMIT ON THE PARK
Summit on the Park is a Community Center on 16 acres of land. We feature an Indoor Aquatic facility, a fitness center, aerobic studio, indoor track and locker rooms including a steam room and sauna. We are also able to hold small and large functions in our Banquet Center.
PLYMOUTH-CANTON COMMUNITY SCHOOLS
The Plymouth-Canton Community School District consists of three high schools, five middle schools, and fifteen elementary schools. The District boasts the only educational park in Michigan, known as the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park (P-CEP).
THE VILLAGE THEATER
The Village Theater at Cherry Hill is a 400 seat, premiere performance venue at the corner of Cherry Hill and Ridge Roads in Canton, Michigan. The 30,000 square foot performing arts and education center sets the stage for both participants and patrons of the arts.
As a centerpiece of the Cherry Hill development, the theater adorns a charming village of homes, shops and community parks while embracing arts and cultural education.

The Canton Public Library serves more than 85,000 residents of
Canton Township, a community in western Wayne County, Michigan.
We are a member of The Library Network
(TLN) and the Metro Net
Library Consortium.

CANTON RELAY FOR LIFE
Relay
For Life
Each year, the Charter Township of Canton hosts Relay for Life, a 24-hour walk-a-thon event at Heritage Park. The event benefits the American Canton Society, which raises money for cancer research. The Chamber of Commerce hosts a team, "Fishing for a Cure", and recruits the help of local businesses and families to help us raise money for our team.
Participants enjoy food and refreshments at the Chamber's tent, as well as the opportunity for children to play games and have fun, all proceeds benefit the walk! Throughout the day, participants will also be invited to take part in some of the walk's scheduled events, which include music, karaoke, "fun" laps, the Luminary Lighting Ceremony, a Survivor Lap, launch of the Floating Hope, and much more!
