Christy's Hometown: Clovis, California

Lying at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, which includes Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Parks, Clovis has been known as "Gateway to the Sierras" since its incorporation in 1912. Only 9 miles away from its larger neighbor to the southwest, the city of Fresno, Clovis is situated in the midst of California's agriculturally rich San Joaquin Valley. At this point, it's pretty much just a normal suburban town, but since it's surrounded by a ton of farming communities, I always felt like I grew up in the country. Moving from California to Michigan was a bit of a shock, weather-wise. I was very amused to learn that the lowest recorded temperature in Clovis history was 17 degrees (Fahrenheit) in 1913. On the day I'm writing this, the forecast for tonight is 18 degrees. Ha!

Known for its slogan, "Clovis - A Way of Life," Clovis has a long history as a western town and has maintained a small town community spirit. I've always felt like I came from a small town, even though the population is now around 96,000. I was completely gleeked to find out that Chris Colfer (Kurt from Glee) is a Clovis native! Maybe the small town spirit explains why this makes me so happy...

Clovis Native Chris Colfer

I attended Clovis High School (go Cougars!), where I studied French with Monsieur Fermier (Mr. Farmer) and had the coolest ceramics teacher ever, Mr. Griffith. When I was growing up there were only two high schools: Clovis High and Clovis West. Buchanan High School was built while I was still living there, and they have since added Clovis North and Clovis East! The town has definitely grown since I moved away in 1998, and Old Town Clovis has been significantly renovated.

I loved going to the Clovis Rodeo and Big Hat Days when I was a kid. And no, I have no idea why it's called Big Hat Days. But it was a blast! (Random trivia: Chris Colfer was NOT a fan of the Clovis Rodeo growing up.) My absolute, hands-down, favorite place to eat in Clovis is a rinky-dink sandwich shop in Old Town called Full 'O' Bull. If you're ever in the area, I recommend the Philly cheese steak...it's amazing!
