Erica's Hometown: Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA
Ann Arbor, MI is home to more college students than real people, more books than students, and more of
me than any other city.
One of the plethora of bookstores that adorn downtown Ann Arbor is The Dawn Treader Book Shop,
home of rare and antiquarian books and, on many a weekend afternoon, me. Amongst the rows and rows of over 70,000 books on
display any scholar could find a home.
However, if your tastes gear more toward the new and un-used, Ann Arbor is also home to
the world's first Borders Book Store. There's nothing quite like buying the latest John Connolly novel and getting a receipt
with the label "Store #: 1".
Of course, all of this reading inevitably leaves you hungry, which is only one of many reasons
to stop buy Zingerman's Delicatessen for some homemade bread or cheese, made-to-perfection sandwiches, olive oils, vinegars, and almost anything
else you could dream up.
Unless you're looking for a more low-key way to unwind and experience Ann Arbor culture, in whic
case The Fleetwood Diner is the place you want to be. Open 24 hours, The Fleetwood has seen more than its share of early-morning-risers, prom-dates who don't want
the night to end, and college-students on whatever schedule it is that they keep.
When I find myself tiring of the sedentary nature of reading and eating, I like to wander over to nearby Cobblestone Farm
to remind myself that Ann Arbor isn't just a college-town. Here you can find some of the domestic, agricultural, and social aspects of Ann Arbor as they were in 1845.
And also you can find goats.
But lest you think we're too old fashioned, Ann Arbor is also home to the world's only Robot Supply and
Repair shop, located right in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor. This is a great place to visit if you find that either you or your robot need a
pick-me-up.
And before finishing your visit to Ann Arbor, let your inner child play at the University of Michigan Exhibit Museum
of Natural History, where it can learn about Michigan wildlife, history, Dinosaurs, and the beauty of a night sky projected on the ceiling.
