We would like to welcome all of you to Linguist, in this, our first issue. Subscriptions have been extraordinary: as of this moment, three days after our first notice, we have 161 listed members. We hope that this bodes well for the future! It is our intention in the next month or so to make the membership list available, through our archive server, to all members of Linguist. This will have to wait for a while, however, until the holiday and conference season is over.

We ask pardon for any delays and irregularities in postings which may occur over the next few weeks. Getting a list together is a great deal of work, and bugs in software seem inevitable. As problems are dealt with, Linguist should become more predictable in its behavior. Unless the volume of submissions requires it, postings will occur approximately once a week.

Meanwhile, to help in our growth and success, please make submit any notices and queries of linguistic relevance to the list.

I have a general question, on behalf of a grad student here. Does anyone know of any recent sociolinguistic studies of religious language?
