ALAA99 REGISTRATION AND CALL FOR PAPERS Applied Linguistics Association of Australia 24th Annual Congress 26-29 September 1999 Perth, Western Australia **ABSTRACTS DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 31 MAY** The twenty-fourth annual congress of the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia will be held from Sunday evening 26 September until Wednesday 29 September 1999, at St George's College and the Graduate School of Education at the University of Western Australia in Perth. The final day (29 September) will be a common day with the Australian Linguistic Society Conference. The congress aims at bringing together researchers involved in any aspect of applied linguistics research under the general theme: 'applied linguistics now: the critical issues'. The program includes invited presentations by renowned experts in the field, as well as talks selected by the program committee. The invited speakers are: *Professor Shirley Brice Heath (Stanford University, California) *Professor Leo Van Lier (Monterey Institute of International Studies, California) *Professor Noboyuki Honna (Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo) *Professor Janet Holmes, ALS invited speaker (Victoria University, Wellington) *Submission of abstracts* The Committee invites submission of proposals for papers and workshops for presentation at the congress. Prospective presenters should comply with the submission guidelines below. Submission guidelines: All abstracts submitted must be for original proposals for papers and workshops. Abstracts should be: * No more than 250 words in length; * submission by mail, fax or email. Email abstracts should be sent as part of the message NOT as an attachment.>Proposers should aim for presentations of 20 minutes and allow for a 7>minute question/discussion time at the conclusion. Workshop proposals are also invited.Workshops will be 90 minutes each. Proposals should provide the details of proposed speakers, themes and activities. Abstracts should be no more than 500 words in length. Send abstracts direct to Graham McKay,details below. Important dates: submission of abstracts and workshop proposals extended deadline: May 31; notification of acceptance: July 15. Publication: Papers may be considered for publication in ARAL (Australian Review of Applied Linguistics). Other avenues for publication will also be explored. Daily rate is $115. Opening function, lunch, morning and afternoon tea are included in the fee.
