The Linguistics Department at the Max Planck Institute for
Evolutionary Anthropology has doctoral student fellowships available
in the following areas:

1) linguistic typology;

2) documentation of a hitherto undescribed or little described
language, including fieldwork;

3) historical linguistics, preferably broad-scale and/ or
theoretically oriented, including comparative linguistics and language
contact;

4) development of computer tools to assist in any of the above.

Fellowships provide full support (including fieldwork where appropriate)
for two years, renewable for one further year. Residence is in Leipzig,
Germany, except during fieldwork, but doctoral dissertations/theses may
be examined by Universities elsewhere.

Prerequisites are:

(a) good linguistic training, especially in descriptive or historical
linguistics or in linguistic typology;

(b) completion of prerequisites for entry into a PhD program (such as a
Master's degree) as determined by the University (and country) where the
applicant intends to submit the dissertation/thesis;

Applicants are requested to send a C.V., statement of research
interests, two letters of recommendation, and a sample of written work
on a relevant topic to:
