Dear linguists: I've been wondering whether non-statistic NLP can survive anyway? It seems to me that all materials related to NLP, IR etc. are statistical or corpus-based on the whole. I do agree that such an approach bears 'descriptive and objective" spirit, but then I believe that too much dependence on it inevitably turns language into mere character strings, which I would say must be a methodological expediency. -- I'd love to have your opinion on this issue.
