Division of English as an International Language

Position Announcement -- Assistant Professor (tenure-track)

The Division of English as an International Language (DEIL) at
the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) invites
applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor (nine-month / full
time appointment) with specialization in Second Language Acquisition
(SLA). The successful candidate will demonstrate both a well-defined
research agenda and a commitment to excellence in teaching. Any area
of specialization in SLA studies will be considered. However,
preference will be given to candidates who can complement the
Division's existing strengths in sociolinguistic approaches to SLA
with more psycholinguistically-oriented approaches to SLA. Classroom
ESL/EFL teaching experience is required. Native or near-native
fluency in English is also required. Knowledge of computer
applications to teaching and research is desirable. Fluency in a
language other than English is also desirable.

Responsibilities include teaching and advising in the Division's
graduate M.A. TESL program and undergraduate departmental programs,
and in the interdisciplinary doctoral program in SLA.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition studies,
(Applied) Linguistics or a related field by the starting date of the
appointment. The salary offered is commensurate with qualifications
and experience. The starting date is August 21, 2001.

To ensure full consideration, please send c.v., three letters of
