The 1999 Second Language Research Forum was held at the
University of Minnesota in September 1999. These selected
proceedings include 22 of the more than 100 papers presented
at the conference. The book is divided into 6 sections:
1. The Impact of Social Factors on SLA
2. Discourse Structure
3. Cognitive Factors: Universal Grammar and Transfer
4. Cognitive Factors: Input, Output and Negotiation
5. Cognitive Factors: Learning Strategies
6. Social Factors
The papers in this volume are representative of the broad
range of research being done on second language acquisition
(SLA). Some studies focus on the learning strategies
employed by second-language learners. Some examine the
internal psychological process of SLA, including work on
the principles and parameters of the universal language
faculty. Others represent the second-language learner as
a social being, documenting the social and interactional
forces that impact the learner. A few examine the interplay
of external (social) and internal (psychological) forces in
SLA. The complete table of contents and introduction can be
