Lecturers in English

A. Older English Language and Literature (1,0 fte; tenure track)
B. Modern English Language and Linguistics (0,9 fte; tenure track)

The vacancies are in the (A) Older Language and Literature and (B) the
Modern Language and Linguistics sections of the English Department at
the faculty of Arts. The English Department is one of the largest in the
Faculty of Arts, with 3 chairs, a total staff of 20 and approx. 450
undergraduates, several international MA and PhD candidates. The staff
contributes to other programmes (e.g. American Studies, Canadian
Studies, Translation, Old Germanic, Medieval Studies, International
Organisations, Communication Studies).

The Department of English has three principal areas of teaching and
research, corresponding to the three chairs: Modern Literature; Modern
Language and Linguistics; and Older Language and Literature. The
Department sets a high value on both specialisation and flexibility;
where necessary, desirable and possible, appointees may be asked to
contribute to teaching beyond their own main specialisation.

Position A: Older Language and Literature (ref. 200065)
The Department is seeking a candidate who can contribute to teaching in
the following areas: I) Old and Middle English language, literature and
culture, II) History of the English language, III) supervision of
honours dissertations ('scripties'), IV) participation in management
tasks. The candidate should be able to contribute to the teaching in
Modern English Language. 

The appointee will carry out research in one of the areas I-II within
the research programme of the KNAW-accredited Research School for
Medieval Studies ('Onderzoekschool Mediļæ½vistiek') and the faculty
Research Institute ICOG .

Position B: Modern Language and Linguistics (ref. 200066)
The Department is seeking a candidate who can contribute to teaching in
the following areas: I) Modern English Linguistics, II) English
proficiency courses, III) supervision of honours dissertations
('scripties'), IV) participation in management tasks.
The appointee will carry out research in one of the areas I-II within
the research programme of the KNAW-accredited Research School BCN and
the faculty Research Institute CLCG. 
CLCG seeks to strengthen its research in (first) language acquisition,
instrumental phonetics and corpus linguistics. 

Candidate's profile
Candidates should fulfil the following criteria:
- First degree in English Language and Literature
- PhD within the area of the position applied for
- Research publications (monographs or essays with reputable academic
 presses, and/or articles in academic journals)
- Wide experience of teaching English at university level
- Administrative and organisational experience
- Readiness to work within a team
- Fluency in English

Terms of appointment
Appointees may be required to follow a short university teacher's
training course. Appointees are expected to be fluent in Dutch within
two years of appointment, and in the same period to have acquired a
permanent address in or near Groningen. 

The appointment will be made with a view to tenure (dependent on
positive evaluation). The salary depends upon the education and relevant
experience of the appointee, but will be between Dfl. 4104,- and Dfl.
8682,- (before tax) per month at a full-time appointment. The posts are
effective from 1 September 2000.
