A recent book by Joseph Garcia "Sign with your Baby" describes a successful method through which babies as young as 8 months can sign in reply to signing or speech by their parents; videotape and TV demonstrations are most impressive. Apart from the practical benefit for the parents and the infants of being able to communicate more effectively, babysigning is of considerable theoretical interest for language acquisition and for seeing language and gesture as the products of a single brain system, a topic for the April Gesture Conference in Oporto. http://www.percepp.demon.co.uk/oporto.htm Robin Allott email: RMAllottMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issuepercepp.demon.co.uk http://www.percepp.demon.co.uk tel/fax: +44 1323 492300
