Dear Linguists: Did you realize (we didn't) that The LINGUIST List posted 569 job announcements in 1999? Of these, 280 contained the substring "univ" in the text; and only 55 contained the substring "ESL" anywhere in the announcement. So, from this admittedly unsystematic count, we would guess that at least 51% of linguistics jobs are at universities; but a very substantial number are also being advertised by industry. And--of more immediate relevance to us--a very substantial number of linguistics jobs are being advertised through The LINGUIST List. What IS the immediate relevance? Well, this is the week of the LINGUIST fund drive. So, we thought we would remind you of the functions that LINGUIST serves in the linguistics community. Many people have told us that the LINGUIST job listings have facilitated their search for employment. But, unfortunately for us, only 58 of the 569 job posters sent us a donation in return for our services. So we must continue to rely on the generosity of our subscribers to keep LINGUIST running. To those of you who helped arrange those 58 job payments, we offer our heartiest thanks. And hearty thanks are due as well to the persons and institutions who have already responded to our call for funds this year. Their names are listed at the end of this message. Thanks to these generous persons, we have raised $13,433 of the $35,000 that we need to fund the 9 Linguist List student editors and programmers. Please join these supporters by donating via our secure credit card form at http://linguistlist.org/donation-form.html or by sending your check to The EMU LINGUIST Editorial Support Fund c/o Helen Aristar-Dry Dept. of English Eastern Michigan U. Ypsilanti, MI USA 48197 Or you can hit "Reply" and send us your pledge by email, prior to sending your check. Then we will be able to list you immediately as one of our donors; and we may be able to reach our goal (and halt these Fund Drive messages) a bit earlier. Remember that Linguist T-shirts and sweatshirts are being offered in return for donations this year. Check http://linguistlist.org/funddrive.html for photos and prices. Your support is of critical importance to us.
