Dear LINGUIST Subscribers, Did you know that in 1999, the LINGUIST list announced 321 new books on linguistics? These represented every subdiscipline, and included books on Mathematical linguistics, Grammars of Endangered Languages, works on Sociolinguistics, Neurolinguistics, Psycholinguistics and Applied linguistics, as well as works on theoretical Phonology, Phonetics, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics. We also brought you the latest information on journals and working papers. We posted the tables of contents of 71 journals in 1999. And last year our book announcement service expanded to include announcements from 23 different linguistics publishers. Thanks to these supporting publishers (and to the authors who brought Linguist to their attention) we were able to bring you news of virtually all the new linguistics books published last year, whether they were listed by large commercial presses or by small non-profit publishers. But The LINGUIST list doesn't just announce books and journals, we review them too, making use of our highly talented and world wide subscriber base. We reviewed 62 books last year. Reviews at the LINGUIST list are unlike reviews you will find anywhere else. We try, wherever possible, to get multiple reviewers to look at a book, so that we can offer contrasting views on the same book and encourage discussion. Many 1999 book reviews stimulated lively debate in our discussion (Disc) forum; and we encouraged the book authors to respond to the reviews. Here are links to our books, reviews, and Table of Contents (TOC) pages: http://www.linguistlist.org/issues/indices/Books2000r.html http://www.linguistlist.org/issues/indices/Review2000r.html http://www.linguistlist.org/issues/indices/TOC2000r.html Many of our subscribers tell us that when they want to find a book on some topic, or buy a book they have heard about, the first place they come is the linguist web site. Our topic-oriented search function at http://linguistlist.org/search.html offers one of the easiest ways to find books that interest you. We also have links to almost all of the major linguistics publishers at http://linguistlist.org/publishers.html. Unfortunately, this service to our community does not come cheaply. While our supporting publishers do very generously help us with donations and grants, publisher support accounts for only about one-third of the funding we need. Right now, it takes one *full time* editor to do nothing but bring you book announcements. If you have ever read a LINGUIST book announcement or a LINGUIST review, or have bought a book you have read about on LINGUIST, we hope that you will consider making a tax deductible donation to the list. We have--and need!--a staff of 9 graduate students, 7 of whom are funded wholly or partly through your donations. Your contributions not only help LINGUIST provide services like the books and reviews, but they also help these outstanding students achieve their academic goals. So far in our Year2000 fund drive, we have received $17,563 of the $35,000 we need to collect--thanks to the generosity of the persons and institutions whose names appear at the bottom of this page. If you have not yet contributed, will you please do so now? As a 501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax deductible. You can donate via our secure credit card form at: http://linguistlist.org/donate-form.html or by sending your check to: The LINGUIST Editorial Support Fund Dept. of English Eastern Michigan U. Ypsilanti, MI USA 48197 If you like, you can hit "Reply" and send us your pledge by email, prior to sending your check. Then we will be able to list you immediately as one of our donors; and we may be able to reach our fund drive goal a bit earlier. If your donation is $30 or over and you would like a Linguist T-shirt or sweatshirt, remember to include your snail-mail address and size. Styles, prices, and photos are available at: http://linguistlist.org/funddrive.html With sincere thanks for your continued support.
