Dear Linguists: As you may know, during the current fund drive we decided to tell you about the different services which LINGUIST has begun offering over the last few years. One of our most recent projects is archiving other linguistic mailing lists on our site. The major goal of this project is to facilitate your research by collecting at one site all of the information that passes through linguistic mailing lists. As things now stand, it's very difficult for researchers to find out what's being discussed on mailing lists. There are a lot of reasons for this. In many cases the lists are on servers which don't allow archiving: all material, therefore, is essentially gone once it is posted, unless some member of the list chooses, as a public service, to keep copies of the postings. In some cases the lists die, and the material disappears along with them. One of the major reasons, however, is simply that the lists are often just plain hard to find. When the LINGUIST project is complete, all of the lists that agree to join us will be archived in a central site. Furthermore, we are hard at work on a multilist search facility. When it is finished, a researcher will be able to search all the archived lists at once. We have been *very* successful at gaining the cooperation of listowners. And we hope we get more! (If your list would like to join, we'd love to hear from you.) We are now archiving no less than 66 lists. We've appended a list of these below, and you can access the archive at the URL: http://linguistlist.org/list-archives.html Some of these lists are not simply archived on our site. They are also hosted on the LINGUIST Listserv machine. We would like to point out that we are willing to set up new linguistic lists on our site, as well as host existing lists for those who do not have good listserv facilities. Unfortunately, things like this archive are expensive to maintain. This year we need $35,000 to pay our graduate students, and so far, on the 7th day of the drive, we have collected $28,704 of the amount. This puts us close to our goal, but not close enough. We still need $6,296 if we are to just to keep pace with our current services. If you have not yet contributed, will you please do so now? As a 501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax deductible. You can donate via our secure credit card form at: http://www.linguistlist.org/donation-form.html or by sending your check to: The LINGUIST Editorial Support Fund Dept. of English Eastern Michigan U. Ypsilanti, MI USA 48197 You can also hit "Reply" and send us your pledge by email, prior to sending your check. Then we will be able to list you immediately as one of our donors; and we may be able to reach our goal (and halt these annoying Fund Drive messages) a bit earlier. If your donation is $30 or over and you would like a Linguist T-shirt or sweatshirt, remember to include your snail-mail address and size. Styles, prices, and photos are available at: http://www.linguistlist.org/funddrive.html With hearty thanks for your continued support, The Linguist crew: Anthony, Andrew, Helen, Karen, Scott, Lydia, James, Naomi, Jody, John, Sudhi, Qian, Ljuba ********************************* List of Lists Archived at LINGUIST: ********************************* ADS-L: The American Dialect Society Mailing List AfAmLanguage: List for the Discussion of African American English ALT: The Association for Linguistic Typology AN-LANG: Austronesian Languages and Linguistics ARABIC-INFO: The Arabic Information List ARABIC-L: Arabic language and linguistics ARCLING: Archaeology/Prehistory and Language ATHLANG-L: Athabascan language and linguistics AUSTRALIAN-LINGUISTICS-L: The Linguistics of Australian languages AZTLAN: Pre-Columbian Cultures And Language List BANTU-L: Sub-Saharan Languages CDA-PHD-CLASS: Virtual class for PhD students working on critical discourse analysis CELTLING: The Celtic Linguistics List CHAUCER: Chaucer and Middle English CHINOOK: The Chinook Studies List COGLING: Cognitive Linguistics & metaphor CORPORA: Text Corpora Distribution List CreoLIST: The CreoLIST Mailing List CRITICS-L: Critical Discourse/Language/Communication Analysis DISCOURS: The Discourse Studies List DM-LIST: The Distributed Morphology List ENDANGERED-LANGUAGES-L: The Endangered Languages List EPRIME: List for E-Prime Experiment Generation System FLING: Feminists in Linguistics FUNKNET: Discussion of issues in Functional Linguistics GALA-L: Gender and Language Association GGSN: Germanic Generative Syntax Newsletter HEL-L: History of the English Language HERITAGE: Heritage Language Education HISTLING: The Historical Linguistics Mailing List HPSG-L: The HPSG-L Mailing List INDO-EUROPEAN: The INDO-EUROPEAN Mailing List INDOLOGY: Languages, Cultures and History of India INFO-CHILDES: General Issues in Child Language Development INFO-PSYSCOPE: List for users of the PsyScope program for experiment generation INFOLING: Distribucin de informacin sobre lingstica espaola IROQUOIS: The Iroquoian Mailing List ITALIANO_L2: La Mailing List per Insegnanti di Italiano L2 LANGUAGE: Quantitative Methods in Language Change L-C: Language and Culture LFG: Forum for the discussion of Lexical-Functional Grammar LING-AMERINDIA: The Indigenous Languages of South America LINGANTH: Linguistic Anthropology Discussion Group LING-LIT: Linguistics and Literature: applying the methods of linguistics to the analysis of literature LINGTYP: Discussion List for The Association for Linguistic Typology LINGUISTIC-EXPLORATION : Linguistic Exploration List LN : Langage Naturel: Information Exchange for the Natural Language Processing Community LOWLANDS-L : Discussion list for people who share an interest in Lowlands Germanic languages and cultures L3-LIST : Discussion list for Third Language Acquisition NAHUAT-L: Nahua Studies and the Nahuatl language NOSTRATIC: Discussion List for Nostratic OLD-IRISH-L: Scholars & Students of Old Irish OPTIMAL: The Optimality List PLAUTDIETSCH-L: Mennonite Low German, a Dialect of Low Saxon PROSODY: Prosody Discussion List RSTLIST: Forum for the Discussion of Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) SALISHAN : The Salishan Studies List SEALANG-L: Southeast Asian Languages SEELANGS: Slavic and Eastern European Languages and Literatures SALON: South Asian Linguistics On Line SIOUAN: Siouan Languages SLLING-L: The Sign Language Linguistics List SOUNDSYMBOL: The Sound Symbolism List URA-LIST: Finno-Ugric Language and Linguistics VYAKARAN: South Asian Languages and Linguistics WORLDWIDEWORDS: World Wide Words ************************************************************** LINGUIST Contributors ANGELS ($1000 and Over) Microsoft - Natural Language Group John Benjamins Publishing Company Anonymous MAINSTAYS ($100 and Over) Anonymous Shanley Allen Heather Bortfeld G.
