Subject: The LINGUIST Mailing List Archive: Fund Drive Day 7

Dear Linguists:

As you may know, during the current fund drive we decided to tell you
about the different services which LINGUIST has begun offering over
the last few years. One of our most recent projects is archiving
other linguistic mailing lists on our site.

The major goal of this project is to facilitate your research by
collecting at one site all of the information that passes through
linguistic mailing lists. As things now stand, it's very difficult for
researchers to find out what's being discussed on mailing lists.
There are a lot of reasons for this. In many cases the lists are on
servers which don't allow archiving: all material, therefore, is
essentially gone once it is posted, unless some member of the list
chooses, as a public service, to keep copies of the postings. In some
cases the lists die, and the material disappears along with them. One
of the major reasons, however, is simply that the lists are often just
plain hard to find.

When the LINGUIST project is complete, all of the lists that agree to
join us will be archived in a central site. Furthermore, we are hard
at work on a multilist search facility. When it is finished, a
researcher will be able to search all the archived lists at once.

We have been *very* successful at gaining the cooperation of
listowners. And we hope we get more! (If your list would like to
join, we'd love to hear from you.) We are now archiving no less than
66 lists. We've appended a list of these below, and you can access the
archive at the URL:

http://linguistlist.org/list-archives.html

Some of these lists are not simply archived on our site. They are
also hosted on the LINGUIST Listserv machine. We would like to point
out that we are willing to set up new linguistic lists on our site, as
well as host existing lists for those who do not have good listserv
facilities.

Unfortunately, things like this archive are expensive to
maintain. This year we need $35,000 to pay our graduate students, and
so far, on the 7th day of the drive, we have collected $28,704 of
the amount. This puts us close to our goal, but not close enough. We
still need $6,296 if we are to just to keep pace with our current
services.

If you have not yet contributed, will you please do so now? As a
501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate
donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax
deductible.

You can donate via our secure credit card form at:

http://www.linguistlist.org/donation-form.html

or by sending your check to:

The LINGUIST Editorial Support Fund
Dept. of English
Eastern Michigan U.
Ypsilanti, MI
USA 48197

You can also hit "Reply" and send us your pledge by email, prior to
sending your check. Then we will be able to list you immediately as
one of our donors; and we may be able to reach our goal (and halt
these annoying Fund Drive messages) a bit earlier.

If your donation is $30 or over and you would like a Linguist T-shirt
or sweatshirt, remember to include your snail-mail address and size.
Styles, prices, and photos are available at:

http://www.linguistlist.org/funddrive.html

With hearty thanks for your continued support,

The Linguist crew: Anthony, Andrew, Helen, Karen, Scott, Lydia,
James, Naomi, Jody, John, Sudhi, Qian, Ljuba
