Position Title: Editor/Senior Editor, Oxford English Dictionary

Location: New York, New York (NOTE: This is not a telecommuting
position)

Reporting to: Principal Editor, the Oxford English Dictionary's North
American Editorial Unit

Job Summary: Writing and editing North American English entries for the
OED

Responsibilities/Duties:

* Writing new entries for historical and modern American English,
Canadian English, and Caribbean English terms

* Editing existing OED entries for North American English terms

* Reviewing general OED text to ensure proper coverage of North
American English

* Conducting or supervising lexical research, in libraries or online

* Recruiting and managing contributors to the North American Reading 
Program

* Assisting the Principal Editor in day-to-day management of department

Qualifications:

The candidate should have graduate training in the humanities
(preferably English), and several years' experience in lexicography. A
clear, elegant writing style and the ability to analyze complex
lexical data accurately and rapidly on-screen are essentials for the
post. The successful candidate should also be expert in the history
of the English language, especially in America, and should possess a
keen awareness of cultural change in America from the sixteenth
century up to today.
