Iran as an ancient Asian country with long history and rich culture,
has been the land of coexistence of different ethnic groups for
centuries. Therefore, it is an excellent laboratory for
sociolinguistic research . Bilingualism and multilingualism, language
planning, language contacts and borrowing, linguistic variations,
language shift and language maintenance, are among the major issues of
the Iranian sociolinguistics that need scientific consideration and
investigations. The present issue on Iran covers most of these
aspects.
