The 9th International Conference on Austronesian Linguistics (9ICAL)
will be held in Canberra, at Burgmann College, The Australian
National University, from January 8-11, 2002.

The 5th International Conference of Oceanic Languages (COOL5) will be
held at the same venue from 14-16 January.

Both conferences are hosted by the Linguistics Department, Research
School of Pacific and Asian Studies at the ANU.

The original deadline for the submission of abstracts has now passed.
However, the organising committee has received a number of enquiries
from linguists who would still like to participate, and so we have
decided to extend the deadline for abstracts until

 31st JULY 2001.

Despite this extension, we would be grateful if would-be participants
would contact us by e-mail (mailto:// as soon as
possible and inform us of their intentions so that we can plan

Interested scholars are invited to offer papers relating to the study
of Austronesian languages for 9ICAL, and specifically to the Oceanic
branch of Austronesian for COOL5. All presenters will be allocated a
total of 30 minutes for their papers: 20 minutes for talking and 10
minutes for questions. Abstracts (maximum of one page) should be
submitted by 1 May 2001.

Anyone who is interested in organising a workshop as part of either
conference should get in touch with the conference organisers as soon
as possible.

Proposals for papers or workshops should be made by filling in the
registration form (accessible via the web address below) which you
can also use to let us know if you are planning to attend either of
the conferences without presenting a paper or organising a workshop.
The form is a rich text format (rtf) file that can be sent to the
mailing address below or emailed as an attachment to

Correspondence regarding the conference should be addressed to the
