COGNITIVE INTERFACES: Constraints on Linking Cognitive Information Emile van de Zee, University of Lincolnshire & Humberside, and Edited by Urpo Nikanne, University of Oslo This book brings new perspectives to bear on the architecture of the mind and the relationship between language and cognition. It considers how information is linked in the mind between different cognitive and expressive levels - so that people can, for example, talk about what they see and act upon what they hear - and how these linkages are and need to be constrained. The book is concerned in particular with the perception and representation of spatial structure. The authors, all psychologists and linguists, show that insights can be gained from the joint deployment of theoretical linguistic and experimental psychological research and the value of a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of mind, brain, and language. LINGUISTIC STRUCTURE AND CHANGE: An Explanation from Language Processing Thomas Berg, University of Hamburg Thomas Berg analyzes language as a psychological phenomenon in order to reach a clearer understanding of why the structure of language is the way it is and how it changes. He claims that real explanations of the structure of language can only emerge by establishing connections between language and its context. The explanatory power of one of these contexts, the psychological one, is examined in detail. 1998 (paper May 2001) 352 pp.; 4 line illus 0-19-829985-0 paper $27.95 0-19-823672-7 cloth $99.00 Oxford University Press For more information about Linguistics titles from Oxford: Visit the Oxford University Press USA web site at http://www.oup-usa.org or e-mail: linguisticsMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issueoup-usa.org
