Syntax and Meaning: S. I. Harada Collected Works in Linguistics
Naoki Fukui, Editor
November 2000
843 pp. + iii (Hardcover)

ISBN 4-469-21261-X
This book is a long-awaited collection of papers by the late Shin-Iti
Harada in the areas of syntax and semantics (two papers in phonology
are also included). Topics covered in the collected papers range from
the syntax of Japanese honorifics, "counter equi" phenomenon as it
relates to the nature of complex predicates, Case conversion
(so-called "ga/no conversion) in Japanese, scrambling as a legitimate
transformation, to such topics as cross-linguistic study of
relativization, the "functional uniqueness principle" (a precursor to
the theta-criterion), French cliticization, and the nature of semantic
representation. The book also contains three essays on the life of
S. I. Harada and his time, as well as five rather detailed commentary
articles on Harada's various works, which discuss the contemporary
significance of his scientific work. The book should be of interest
to any linguist working within the generative framework, particularly
those who work on the syntax and semantics of Japanese and other East
Asian languages.
