SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT International Conference LANGUAGE AND EMPOWERMENT 11-13 April 2002 Hilton Petaling Jaya Malaysia Organised by: Malaysian Association of Modern Languages Call For Participation INTRODUCTION The interdependence of language and social context has never been more widely acknowledged than in the modern-day realization that language and empowerment are inextricably linked to societal developments. The role of language in building, determining and changing power relationships is receiving much attention today. There is a growing awareness that language functions and language use are closely related to the exercise of power. This exercise of power is manifested through the ideological workings of language in different spheres of society be they academic, professional, commercial, political etc. OBJECTIVES The objectives of the conference are: 1. To share insights and experiences on the interrelationships between language and empowerment in different social contexts. 2. To discuss and review good practices in language use that can bring about positive changes in power relationships. 3. To encourage continuing research activities in areas related to language and power. MODES OF PRESENTATION Plenary Session (40 minutes) Parallel Session (30 minutes) Panel Discussion (40 minutes) Poster Exhibition TOPICS OF DISCUSSION * Developments in theories, approaches and working models on the relationship between language and power. * Links in theory and practice between language, power and ideology. * Reports and studies of language use and empowerment in various formal and informal contexts. * Findings of data-driven research on language and its empowerment potential. LANGUAGE OF CONFERENCE Conference papers may be written and presented in English or Malay. Call for papers International linguistics conference (graduate and postgraduate students) BOUILLON DE LANGUES Sens et structures : approche contrastive April 19-20, 2002 SILEX (UMR 8528 CNRS) - Universit� de Lille III, France Presentations can address various linguistics questions (of any theoretical framework) examined from a comparative point of view (different languages, one language and its dialectical and/or diachronic variants, etc.). Every speaker will have 30 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of discussion. Conference languages are English and French.
