CHAIR - Department of Languages and Linguistics

El Paso, the largest city located on the U.S./Mexico border, is but a
bridge-length away from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The metropolitan area
has a population of about 2 million. A bilingual bicultural city, El
Paso has a temperate climate and is located within driving distance of
many of the region's natural wonders.

The University of Texas at El Paso is the largest Mexican-American
majority institution in the country, designated as a Hispanic-serving
university. It is classified as a doctoral/research-intensive
university in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher
Education. It is the second oldest component of the University of
Texas system.

The successful chair candidate will have a proven record of leadership
and administrative skills in language and /or linguistics programs.
Ph. D. and evidence of excellence in teaching and scholarship
required, but field of specialization within languages and linguistics
open. Since we are a Hispanic-serving institution on the U.S.- Mexico
border, the successful chair must be committed to pursuing
opportunities that this status affords, including applying for grants
and building links with other departments and colleges within the
university and with the public schools. Rank and salary commensurate
with qualifications.

The Department of Languages and Linguistics offers undergraduate
majors and minors in Spanish, French, and Linguistics, an M.A. in
Spanish and in Linguistics, a minor in Translation and Interpreting, a
graduate certificate in TESOL and an M.F.A. in Bilingual Creative
Writing. It houses a large and growing ESOL program.

Please send letter of application, CV and three references to Sandra
Beyer, Chair, Department of Languages and Linguistics, University of
Texas at El Paso, El Paso, TX, 79968.
