The metropolitan area has a population of about 2 million. A bilingual bicultural city, El Paso has a temperate climate and is located within driving distance of many of the region's natural wonders. The University of Texas at El Paso is the largest Mexican-American majority institution in the country, designated as a Hispanic-serving university. It is classified as a doctoral/research-intensive university in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. It is the second oldest component of the University of Texas system. The successful chair candidate will have a proven record of leadership and administrative skills in language and /or linguistics programs. Ph. D. and evidence of excellence in teaching and scholarship required, but field of specialization within languages and linguistics open. Since we are a Hispanic-serving institution on the U.S.- Mexico border, the successful chair must be committed to pursuing opportunities that this status affords, including applying for grants and building links with other departments and colleges within the university and with the public schools. The Department of Languages and Linguistics offers undergraduate majors and minors in Spanish, French, and Linguistics, an M.A. in Spanish and in Linguistics, a minor in Translation and Interpreting, a graduate certificate in TESOL and an M.F.A. in Bilingual Creative Writing. It houses a large and growing ESOL program.
