PhD Scholarship in Topology & Language Our research team is looking for a PhD student with skills in both linguistics and mathematics. We are undertaking an international study into whether the concepts of mathematics (in particular topology) are understood differently by researchers from different language groups. We have room for a graduate student seeking to obtain a PhD in this area, and are able to offer substantial financial assistance for at least two years to a suitable applicant (local fees plus $NZ12 000). Under a bilateral agreement, local fees apply to citizens of France and Germany. The applicant will need a good Honours or Masters degree in mathematics or linguistics PLUS substantial knowledge in the other discipline. Applicants with a background in either topology or cognitive linguistics will have an advantage. Applications will be considered as they are received, and the position will remain open until an appointment is made. We would like the successful applicant to start as soon as possible after February 1st, 2002.
