This department provides tuition in English linguistics and English proficiency for the Faculty's degrees in English Language and Culture and in Communication and Information Sciences. The department is characterized by a thorough-going integration of theory and practice. It focuses on functional linguistics, text and genre analysis, the relation between language and gender, and medieval language and literature. The department currently wishes to develop a new focus on the linguistic investigation of orality, for example the grammatical analysis of the spoken word. Task: In agreement with the Chair of English Lanaguage, you will teach aspects of English linguistics and proficiency, initially concentrating on oral skills and grammar. The Faculty has a so-called matrix structure, which means that you may be teaching on more than one degree course. You may also be asked to supervise dissertations. You will be expected to contribute to the Faculty's research in linguistics, in the focus group `The Shape of Language: the principles underlying language and language use'; your speciality will preferably be in the area of the linguistic study of orality. You will also be expected to carry out certain administrative tasks. Requirements: Doctorate in English Language, General Linguistics or Applied Linguistics. An excellent command of English, both written and spoken. A thorough knowledge of one or more English-speaking communities. A teaching specialism in oral skills and grammar, including familiarity with the appropriate didactic principles and relevant ICT applications. A research specialism in orality and language structure, or a willingness to address this area in your research. The ability to work in a team. Special remarks: The position is composed of two parts. The teaching part amounts to 50% of a full position; the research part to 20%. The contract will be initially for two years; thereafter tenure is available. A non-Dutch-speaking candidate will be expected to have acquired Dutch within two years of appointment. There is a possibility that this position will be expanded in the foreseeable future. Salary: In keeping with the salary regulations for academic staff, the maximum salary for full-time appointment is NLG 8769 per month (before tax and other deductions; salary scale 12).
