ALASA was established in 1979 as a non-discriminatory and non- profit Association. Currently it has a membership of about 350 drawn from Africa and other continents.The internationally recognised SOUTH AFRICAN JOURNAL OF AFRICAN LANGUAGES is published under the auspices of ALASA. The Association has two aims:(a) to promote interaction between researchers, students and teachers of African languages and literature,(b) to assist in the promotion of research,language development and effective verbal and written communication in a multilingual society.ALASA also liaises with other organisations with similar interests. The 11th International Biennial ALASA Conference will be held at the University of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, from 11-13 July 2001 and the theme is AFRICAN LANGUAGES IN THE 21st CENTURY:STRATEGIC PLANS. 6TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE LANGUAGES OF FAR EAST, SOUTHEAST ASIA AND WEST AFRICA ***********LESEAWA, CALL FOR PAPERS********************** September 25-28, 2001 University of St. Petersburg, Russia First circular The University of St. Petersburg and The Institute for Asian and African Studies (Moscow State University) are pleased to announce that the 6th International Conference *LANGUAGES OF FAR EAST, SOUTHEAST ASIA AND WEST AFRICA* will be hosted by the University of St. Petersburg on September 25-28, 2001. 20 minute papers are being solicited. As before, this conference aims to encourage a spirit of dialogue between students of Far East/Southeast Asia and of West Africa. The conference offers a unique opportunity for its participants to exchange views on the languages whose structures share so many features, despite genetic or areal unrelatedness. SPECIAL SESSION A Special Session will be held, devoted to formal methods of linguistic analysis as applied to the languages of FE/SEA and WA. Reports on NLP studies, as well as on current linguistic theories aiming for formal models of language or speech are welcome. Invited speakers are to be announced. Working languages will be English and Russian. Notifications of acceptance will be mailed out before June 10, 2001. Full-text papers (10 pages, 1800 characters per page) are due no later than July 15. REGISTRATION FEE is USD 60. The registration fee includes a volume of conference proceedings (to be published prior to the conference), coffee-breaks, lunch, cultural program, transportation (to and from the airport and daily shuttle service). The fee will be paid upon arrival. LODGING: regular hotels (up to 4-5 stars) at USD 80-100 per night; University dorms at USD 45 per night for a living block - two bedrooms (2-3 beds each), shower, WC, kitchenette.
