(USAC) is pleased to announce 2 full-time English teaching position openings (reference number PUE2) at our Puebla, Puebla campus in Mexico beginning in August 2001. The University: The Universidad de la Sierra, A.C. is an accredited nonprofit private institution that offers undergraduate, graduate, certificate and distance learning programs. At the undergraduate level, USAC offers programs in law, accounting, business administration, tourism, information systems, computer science, engineering, and architecture. USAC offers graduate programs in teaching, administration, finances and law. USAC's certificate programs include education, administration and taxes. The University has grown to include 3 campuses and has plans for further expansion. At present, USAC has campuses in Huauchinango, Puebla; Puebla, Puebla; and Poza Rica, Veracruz. Location: Puebla is a lovely colonial city with approximately 2 million inhabitants. The University is situated in the historic center of the city in a beautifully restored colonial building. Puebla has been designated a cultural heritage site by UNESCO and is only 2.5 hours away from Mexico City. Puebla has numerous museums, markets, nearby archeological sites, and even has several active and inactive volcanoes in the area. Responsibilities: - Teach approximately 20-25 contact hours per week in our regular and distance learning programs, and community language workshops. - Conduct 2 teaching methodology workshops per year in the Teaching Internship Program at our Huauchinango, Puebla campus. - Participate in regular faculty meetings. In addition, the selected candidates may be required to participate in various inter-campus language committees. Requirements: - Native speaker of English - Master's degree in TESOL, Linguistics, English or a closely related field - Professionalism, cultural sensitivity, flexibility, a positive attitude, and the ability to adapt to another culture - 2 years of teaching experience - International living and/or traveling experience - Communicative fluency in Spanish preferred - Teacher-training and CALL experience desirable Application Information: - Cover letter stating professional interests, academic training, practical experience and availability dates (Please include position reference number) - CV - Three letters of recommendation from former professors or employers who would be able to comment on your suitability for an international post - Unofficial transcripts (Please have your university's registrar send official copies to the Puebla Search Committee's attention) - Photocopies of diplomas and applicable certificates (The selected candidates MUST have an original Apostille of his or her transcripts in order to obtain an FM3 work visa.) The Universidad de la Sierra, A.C. (USAC) is pleased to announce 3-4 English and/or French teaching internship position openings for the Fall 2001 (August-December) semester at our Huauchinango, Puebla campus. The USAC Teaching Internship Program: Established in 1997, this continuous program is designed to give graduate students enrolled in accredited TESOL programs and recent MA TESOL graduates an opportunity to gain valuable international teaching experience. Interns may arrange to earn graduate academic credit for their work with USAC. Interns are integral members of the department's faculty and have the opportunity to teach a variety of language classes, as well as work on curriculum, material and text development. The program has excellent support services for interns that include a comprehensive orientation, weekly round table discussions, teaching methodology workshops, and class observation feedback sessions. On occasion, the program has openings for interns who have bachelor's degrees coupled with a strong interest in Mexican culture and language teaching. It is located in the Sierra Norte of Puebla and is 100 miles northeast of Mexico City (3 hours via bus). Intern Responsibilities: - Interns will teach approximately 15-20 contact teaching hours per week - Staff the USAC Language Center, which sponsors complimentary English and French language workshops. On occasion, Nahuatl (a local indigenous language) workshops are offered as well - Actively participate in faculty meetings, round table discussions, teaching methodology workshops, and USAC-sponsored language activities - Work on special projects as designed (curriculum, resource and text development) - Teach short-term Saturday classes as needed in the distance-learning program - Teach corporate English courses as needed If interns are assigned to work on special projects, the overall contact teaching hours will be reduced accordingly. Interns are allotted preparation and grading time for each hour in the classroom. The remaining hours of the 40-hour workweek are devoted to projects. Compensation: The University will provide the following: - Free University email account and free internet access - Complimentary furnished housing (shared with up to 2 other interns) - Complimentary breakfast, lunch and snacks at the El Mirador restaurant and University cafeteria - Stipend of 6,000-8,000 pesos per semester (approximately 650-850 USD); end of contract bonus of 300 USD; additional bonuses available if invited for a calendar year contract. Stipend, reimbursements and bonuses are paid in pesos. - Full scholarship for USAC graduate courses (3 credits per semester) Contract Dates: University classes are tentatively scheduled to begin in mid August and end in mid December. Following the cessation of classes, the University holds a brief final examination period. Minimum Requirements: - Native speaker of English or French (we currently have a local Mexican teaching staff and are searching for native speakers to complement the department.) - Earned bachelor's degree in TESOL, English, French or a closely related field - Professionalism, cultural sensitivity, maturity, flexibility, a positive attitude and the ability to adapt to another culture - Access to an e-mail account and fax machine during the application period Preferred Qualifications: - Current enrollment in an accredited TESOL master's program or a recent graduate of an accredited MA TESOL program - International living and/or traveling experience - Tutoring and/or teaching experience - Proficiency in Spanish is not required but is very helpful since few people in the area speak English.
