Dear Linguists, Can you believe that we posted 834 separate job announcements last year? This is an increase of fifty percent over the year before! In fact, out of all of LINGUIST's postings for 2000, a quarter were job announcements. Of these, 348 had the words "professor", "lecturer" or "teacher" in the text, which suggests that about 500 were from industry. And of more immediate relevance to us is the fact that a very substantial number of linguistics jobs are being advertised through The LINGUIST List. What IS the immediate relevance? Well, since this is the week of the LINGUIST fund drive, we thought we should remind you of the functions that LINGUIST serves in the linguistics community. We have been told by many people that they found employment through the job listings on LINGUIST. But unfortunately for us, only a small number of our job posters actually send a donation for our posting their ad. If you found employment, or found a valuable staff member through LINGUIST and have not yet donated, now is the perfect time. To those of you who helped arrange job payments, we offer our sincere thanks. We rely on your generosity to keep LINGUIST running. And hearty thanks are due as well to the persons and organizations who have already responded to our call for funds this year. Their names are listed at the end of this message. Thanks to these generous persons, we have raised $14,236 of the $40,000 that we need to fund the LINGUIST List student editors and programmers. Please join these supporters by donating via our secure credit card form at http://linguistlist.org/donation-form.html or by sending your check to: The EMU LINGUIST Editorial Support Fund c/o Helen Aristar-Dry Dept. of English Eastern Michigan U. Ypsilanti, MI USA 48197 Or you can hit "Reply" and send us your pledge by email, prior to sending your check. Then we will be able to list you immediately as one of our donors; and we may be able to reach our goal (and halt these Fund Drive messages) a bit earlier. As a 501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax deductible. And remember, if your donation is $25 or over, you can get a LINGUIST T-shirt! For larger amounts, you may qualify for a long-sleeved shirt or a sweatshirt. And new this year are baby T-shirts, size 2-4 years. For styles, prices, and photos go to: http://www.linguistlist.org/funddrive.html . Don't forget to let us know your mailing address and what style and size you would like! And don't forget to find the "Singing Pig" on the LINGUIST Home Page and click for our sophisticated production, "The LINGUIST Fund Drive Experience"! Thanks for your continued support of LINGUIST, The LINGUIST Crew, Anthony, Andrew, Helen, John, Terry, Simin, Karen, Lydia, Naomi, James, Michael, Ljuba, Jody, Marie, Gayathri, and Heather LINGUIST Contributors MAINSTAYS ($100 and Over) Joseph Fortunato Beth Levin Barbara H.
