Dear LINGUIST Subscribers, In Year 2000, the LINGUIST list announced 386 new books on linguistics. We also brought you the latest information on journals and working papers. We posted 237 tables of contents of 110 journals and 9 working papers last year. These represented every subdiscipline, and included books on Mathematical linguistics, Computational Linguistics, and Grammars of Endangered Languages. They included works on Sociolinguistics, Neurolinguistics, Psycholinguistics and Applied linguistics, as well as theoretical Phonology, Phonetics, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics. And reflecting the needs of our subscribers from all over the world, these books and journals covered a wide range of languages, including Arabic, Athabaskan, Australian and African languages, Azari, Chinese, Early Germanic, French, German, Hungarian, Iranian, Japanese, Native American languages, Old Indo-European, Polynesian, Spanish, Turkic, Uralic, and Sino-Tibetan. And last year our book announcement service expanded to include announcements from 41 different linguistics publishers. We at the LINGUIST List appreciate all of the help from these supporting publishers and from the authors who brought Linguist to their attention. We were able to bring you news of virtually all the new linguistics books published last year, whether they were listed by large commercial presses or by small non-profit publishers. The LINGUIST list not only brings you announcements of books and journals, but we review them too. Making use of our highly talented and world wide subscriber base, we reviewed 62 books last year. Reviews at the LINGUIST list are unlike reviews you will find anywhere else. We try, wherever possible, to get multiple reviewers to look at a book, so that we can offer contrasting views on the same book and encourage discussion. Many book reviews posted in 2000 stimulated lively debate in our discussion (Disc) forum; and we encouraged the book authors to respond to the reviews. The links to our books, reviews, and Table of Contents (TOC) pages are: http://linguistlist.org/issues/indices/Books2001r.html http://linguistlist.org/issues/indices/Review2001r.html http://linguistlist.org/issues/indices/TOC2001r.html Many of our subscribers tell us that when they want to find a book on a particular topic, or buy a book they have heard about, the first place they go is the linguist web site. Our topic-oriented search function at http://linguistlist.org/search.html offers one of the easiest ways to find books that interest you. We also have links to almost all of the major linguistics publishers at http://linguistlist.org/publishers.html . Unfortunately, this service to our community does not come cheaply. While our supporting publishers help us very generously with donations and grants, this support accounts for only about one-third of the funding we need. Right now, it takes one *full time* editor to do nothing but bring you book announcements. If you have ever read a LINGUIST book announcement or a LINGUIST review, or have bought a book you have read about on LINGUIST, we hope that you will consider making a tax deductible donation to the list. We have--and need!--a staff of 10 graduate students, 8 of whom are funded wholly or partly through your donations. Your contributions not only help LINGUIST provide services like the book announcements and reviews, but they also help these outstanding students achieve their academic goals So far in our Year 2001 fund drive, we have received $15,286 of the $40,000 we need to collect--thanks to the generosity of the persons and institutions whose names appear at the bottom of this page. If you have not yet contributed, will you please do so now? You can donate by credit card at http://linguistlist.org/donation.html or you can send a check made out to "The Linguist Editorial Support Fund" to: The LINGUIST Editorial Support Fund c/o Helen Aristar-Dry Dept. of English Language and Linguistic Eastern Michigan University Ypsilanti, MI 48197 Or you can simply hit "Reply" to this message, make a pledge by email, and send your check later. Then we will be able to list you immediately as one of our donors; and we may be able to reach our goal (and halt these Fund Drive messages) a bit earlier. Remember, if you want a shirt, be sure to include your size, style preference, and a snail-mail address with your check or email pledge. As a 501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax deductible. In return for a donation of $25 or more, we would like to send you a snazzy, dark blue LINGUIST T-shirt or sweatshirt. Go to http://linguistlist.org/funddrive.html for styles and prices, as well as photos of our fashion-conscious staff modeling this oh-so-elegant casual attire! And don't forget to find the "Singing Pig" on the LINGUIST Home Page and click for our sophisticated production, "The LINGUIST Fund Drive Experience"! Thank you in advance for your support of LINGUIST.
