Evaluating English Worldwide project A new website is now available outlining the goals and methods of a group of scholars interested in the first coordinated comparative evaluation of various regional dialects of English on a global basis: < http://www.otago.ac.nz/anthropology/Linguistic/Accents.html > We come from many countries, from New Zealand to Sweden to Singapore, and disciplines (anthropology, psychology, linguistics, etc.), but we are working together to examine attitudes toward a standard stimulus tape featuring female and male voices using Southern English (RP-type), North American (Inland Northern), and General Australian and New Zealand English accents. The website presents our aims, methods, clips of the eight voices used, and results from seven nations (New Zealand, Australia, England, America, Sweden, Finland, Germany). Other samples are being collected from Singapore, Poland, and Fiji, and we hope to recruit scholars from other countries like Japan, China, Brazil, Nigeria, etc. Scholars interested in becoming involved in the project are urged to contact me at the e-mail address below.
