Subject: Ask-A-Linguist - Fund Drive Day 5

Dear Linguists,

As many of you may know, in addition to the main list, Linguist also
provides a very valuable service for future and/or non-linguists. This
service, ASK-A-LINGUIST, is staffed by a panel of 63 professional
linguists who share their time and expertise with those interested in
receiving information about questions related to linguistics and
language.

For the ease of its users, ASK-A-LINGUIST is constructed like the
LINGUIST discussion list in which the questions and responses are
organized and archived by thread. By addressing queries that are
relevant to linguistics and language, we feel that ASK-A-LINGUIST
provides the public with a very direct, thorough, and "user-friendly"
source of linguistic information.

We have added links to the personal pages of over half of our
distinguished volunteers so that readers can simply click to connect
to these linguists' personal web pages. ASK-A-LINGUIST has also
recently added a new feature called Ask A Linguist Tutor, which
welcomes questions from students or teachers regarding any matter
having to do with language, languages, or linguistics. It is staffed
by a panel of volunteer linguistic majors from the University of
Michigan.

We would like to thank the ASK-A-LINGUIST panel members, as well as
the LINGUIST subscribers for their continued support. Their
contributions and suggestions enable us to improve and maintain this
beneficial resource. And although ASK-A-LINGUIST is provided as a free
service staffed by a generous panel of experts who volunteer their
time and expertise, we still need our staff of editors to update,
improve, and expand this useful facility. Without the continued
financial support of the linguistic community, LINGUIST would be
unable to offer ASK-A-LINGUIST--the service that both the general
public and blooming young linguists have found so valuable.

Today is the 5th day of the 2001 Fund Drive. We have received
$17,296 of the $40,000 we need to collect. We heartily thank all who
have contributed; their names are listed at the bottom of this page.
Won't you join them in contributing?

You can donate by credit card at
http://linguistlist.org/donation.html

or you can send a check made out to "The Linguist Editorial
Support Fund" to:

Or you can simply hit "Reply" to this message, make a pledge by email,
and send your check later. Then we will be able to list you
immediately as one of our donors; and we may be able to reach our goal
(and halt these Fund Drive messages) a bit earlier. Remember, if you
want a shirt, be sure to include your size, style preference, and a
snail-mail address with your check or email pledge.

As a 501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate
donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax
deductible.

In return for a donation of $25 or more, we would like to send you a
snazzy, dark blue LINGUIST T-shirt or sweatshirt. Go to

http://linguistlist.org/funddrive.html

for styles and prices, as well as photos of our fashion-conscious
staff modeling this oh-so-elegant casual attire!

And don't forget to find the "Singing Pig" on the LINGUIST Home Page
and click for our sophisticated production, "The LINGUIST Fund Drive
Experience"!

Thank you in advance for your support of LINGUIST.

The LINGUIST Crew,

Anthony, Andrew, Helen, John, Terry, Simin, Karen, Lydia, Naomi,
James, Michael, Ljuba, Jody, Marie, Gayathri, and Heather
