Dear Linguists, As you may know, during the current fund drive we decided to tell you about the different services which LINGUIST has begun offering over the last few years. One of the projects we began last year is archiving other linguistic mailing lists on our site. The major goal of this project is to facilitate your research by collecting at one site all of the information that passes through linguistic mailing lists. As things now stand, it's very difficult for researchers to find out what's being discussed on mailing lists. There are a lot of reasons for this. In many cases the lists are on servers which don't allow archiving: all material, therefore, is essentially gone once it is posted, unless some member of the list chooses, as a public service, to keep copies of the postings. In some cases the lists die, and the material disappears along with them. One of the major reasons, however, is simply that the lists are often just plain hard to find. The LINGUIST project is not complete, and will never be complete as long as there are any linguistic lists that we do not archive. But it is our commitment to archive all lists that agree to join us, and ensure that access to them is available at a central site. Furthermore, we have put in place a multilist search facility, which you can find at the URL: http://listserv.linguistlist.org/multilist/searchall.html With this search facility, a researcher can search all the archived lists at once. We hope this will be very useful! We have been *very* successful at gaining the cooperation of listowners. And we hope we get more! (If your list would like to join, we'd love to hear from you.) We are now archiving no less than 66 lists. You can access the archive at the URL: http://linguistlist.org/list-archives.html Some of these lists are not simply archived on our site. They are also hosted on the LINGUIST Listserv machine. We would like to point out that we are willing to set up new linguistic lists on our site, as well as host existing lists for those who do not have good listserv facilities. But of course, it would not be possible for The LINGUIST List to maintain this service without the funding which your donations provide. Today is the 9th day of the 2001 Fund Drive. We have received $22,841 of the $40,000 we need to collect. We heartily thank all who have contributed; their names are listed at the bottom of this page. If you would like to make your contribution in support of the Queries service and The LINGUIST List in general, you can do so now by donating via our secure credit card form at: http://linguistlist.org/donation.html or you can send a check made out to "The Linguist Editorial Support Fund" to: The LINGUIST Editorial Support Fund c/o Helen Aristar-Dry Dept. of English Language and Linguistic Eastern Michigan University Ypsilanti, MI 48197 Or you can simply hit "Reply" to this message, make a pledge by email, and send your check later. Then we will be able to list you immediately as one of our donors; and we may be able to reach our goal (and halt these Fund Drive messages) a bit earlier. Remember, if you want a shirt, be sure to include your size, style preference, and a snail-mail address with your check or email pledge. As a 501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax deductible. In return for a donation of $25 or more, we would like to send you a snazzy, dark blue LINGUIST T-shirt or sweatshirt. Go to http://linguistlist.org/funddrive.html for styles and prices, as well as photos of our fashion-conscious staff modeling this oh-so-elegant casual attire! And don't forget to find the "Singing Pig" on the LINGUIST Home Page and click for our sophisticated production, "The LINGUIST Fund Drive Experience"! Thank you in advance for your support of LINGUIST.
