Comparatives and DP-Structure

'Comparatives and DP-Structure' investigates aspects of the
comparative construction, focussing on phenomena located at the
syntax-semantics interface. The thesis advocates a new,
compositionally transparent syntax for nominal comparatives, and
presents a new perspective on two types of ellipsis (Comparative
Deletion and Comparative Ellipsis). The empirical issues addressed
include the impact of word order variation on ellipsis interpretation,
scope in intensional contexts, reconstruction, cross over phenomena
and the relation between ellipsis scope and binding scope.

Evidence for Phonological Categories from Speech Perception

Two experiments are presented that test how listeners use certain
acoustic cues to classify English stop consonants with regard to two
phonological dimensions, place of articulation and voicing. Loglinear
models of listener classification suggest that the categorization
observed here is best described using the phonological category of
distinctive feature. Features are argued to play a role in
classification and are fundamental to speech perception.
