linguistlist.org>Dear Fellow Readers of the Linguist List, OWLS (Ordinary Working Linguists, so labeled, I believe, by Chuck Fillmore) are probably the most frequent readers of the Linguist List, and use it to follow current debates and discussions, to learn about new books and the contents of the latest issues of journals, and to seek data and references for research and teaching. But others read the list too - students who may or may not yet be quite ready to write in themselves, job-seekers, scholars in related fields who are interested in specific aspects of language science, and linguists (like me) who are doing something else but want to keep up. We all rely on the Linguist List as a direct connection to the field. Together we are a community that worries about media coverage, notes the dissertations which serve to introduce new scholars and further the field, and celebrates the contributions of our late colleagues. In exchange for all that we gain from the Linguist List, we should be reciprocating, and the best way to show our gratitude to Helen, Tony and their gang for their extraordinary work is to contribute to the annual fund raiser - both Linguist List and our contributions to it should be seen as central aspects of our professional lives!
