linguistlist.org>How much is a subscription to The Linguist List worth ? Most comparable web sites with membership programs charge upwards of $50 per year to access the same depth, breadth and quality of information that the Linguist List provides for free. I'm sure a lot of us pay for these services, and use them far less often than we do The Linguist List (I know I do, that's for sure). Thinking about it, if The Linguist List had to commercially provide its services, you can be sure the operating cost would be more than the $48,000 pa that's currently required. An estimate of several hundred thousand dollars would probably be closer to the mark - the real commercial costs of The Linguist List would only start with web hosting, web site development, programming, and editorial staff. This alone would raise the cost of a subscription from "free" to a significant amount. So, how much is an annual subscription to The Linguist List worth ? It's probably a debatable point. Certainly it's worth donating to the annual fund drive, which allows the folks at The Linguist List to provide these resources for free to the wider linguistic community. - Baden Hughes * ... and if you live in the United States, the LINGUIST List is even more of a bargain, because not only can you subscribe for free, but you can also donate for free. How does this work? Because LINGUIST List is part of an educational institution, we qualify as a 501(c) organization to receive tax-deductible donations. Therefore your taxes are reduced by the amount you choose to donate to us. So if you donate $30, it won't cost you anything. If you donate $100, it still won't cost you anything. Just ask us for a tax receipt when you donate. But that's not all: a lot of employers have a matching donation scheme, whereby they match whatever donation you make to a charity like us. They can claim back the tax too, so your donation is doubled. So now you've donated $60, or $200, and yet it still hasn't cost you anything. The LINGUIST List does not receive any government stipend for its daily operations, for posting issues, for maintaining the web site. But by using tax schemes such as these, you are determining exactly how you want your taxes to be spent. Thanks to the generosity of everyone listed below, we have now collected $42,470. From there you have the choice of donating straight away by credit card using our secure form, or you can send us a cheque later. If you do send a cheque, please make it payable in US dollars; we get charged about $50 a time (sic!) to convert currency (no such problems with a credit card). Then we will be able to list you immediately as one of our donors; and we may be able to reach our goal (and halt these Fund Drive messages) a bit earlier.
