Dissertation Abstract: 

In the process of translation all elements, which constitute the
discourse, should be preserved but in practice this is not always the
case. This results in 'poor quality' translation. Certain patterns of
change (shifts) occur for different reasons. The thematic organisation
of the source text (ST) cannot always be retained in the target text
(TT) and the translator has to find a thematic formulation more
appropriate to the target language. This study uses two discourse
perspectives in search of patterns of change in the translation of
business reports, from swedish into English. The discourse
perspectives are those of Halliday(1994) & Fries (1992) as regards
thematic organisation and of Hoey (1991)as regards
cohesion.

The study of these patterns of change will be used to test notions of
'universal features in translation' as postulated by Baker (1996) and
Blum-Kulka (1986).
