Dear Colleagues, The prosodically annotated IViE corpus is now available via the following web-site held in the Phonetics Laboratory at the University of Oxford: http://www.phon.ox.ac.uk/~esther/ivyweb/search_trans.html - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The page offers - Speech data from seven dialects of English spoken in the British Isles, in .wav format - Data from one male and one female speaker per dialect, in five speaking styles - Downloadable prosodic transcriptions Users can run searches for transcriptions based on any combination of dialect, gender and speaking style. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Transcriptions: The transcriptions were made with the IViE system for prosodic labelling: http://www.phon.ox.ac.uk/~esther/ivyweb/guide.html Transcriptions can be downloaded in the form of separate text files, time-aligned with the associated speech files. Speech data and transcriptions can be displayed in xwaves but also in other signal processing packages such as wavesurfer or PRAAT (see our web page for URLs). Xwaves users can download labelling scripts for non-interactive and interactive speaking styles from the page. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background The prosodically annotated corpus contains a balanced subset of speech data from the IViE corpus (IViE = Intonational Variation in English). The complete IViE corpus contains 36 hours of speech data from 108 speakers, from nine dialects of English spoken in the British Isles. More information on the IViE corpus is available here: http://www.phon.ox.ac.uk/~esther/ivyweb/ The annotated corpus contains one hour of speech data, transcribed on five tiers: orthography, location of prominent syllables, pitch movements surrounding prominent syllables, intonational phonology and miscellaneous comments and alternative transcriptions. Seven dialects have been included: Belfast, Dublin, Newcastle, Bradford Punjabi, Leeds, Cambridge, London. Data in five speaking styles have been transcribed: read sentences, read text, retold text, map task, free conversation. Each dialect is represented by one male and one female adolescent speaker. All downloads are free of charge. The data and the transcriptions are available for any academic purpose, but not for commercial purposes.Mail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue

I wish to inform you of a recently uploaded website titled: http://www.ukrainianscholarships.org. We created it to inform the general public about the USA/USA Program. But it contains some information about other scholarship opportunities that you will hopefully find useful. This site will expand in the future. Ukraine badly lags other countries in Eastern Europe and the former USSR in sending students abroad to study.
