Tense, Time and Aspect: from Morphology to Interpretation edited by Brenda Laca. >From the collection "Sciences du Langage", edited by Brenda Laca, Patrick Sauzet, Anne Zribi-Hertz. Presses Universitaires de Vincennes, Saint-Denis 2002. pp. 226. ISBN 2-84292-116-X (Please note: the book is in French) This book examines the representation of Time in languages. The questions in the center of the volume are: how do morpho-syntactic categories yield temporal interpretations at the clause level and in discourse? What are the forms of cross-linguistic variation in this domain and what are its limits. The seven contribution in this volume deal with these questions in a unified conceptual frame defined according to three characteristics: the distinction between temporal localization, aspect and event (Aktionsart), the analysis of tense as the set of relations between intervals, and the interaction between the lexicon and grammatical categories. The papers in this collection shed new light on traditional descriptive problems such as the question of the borderlines between aspect and Aktionsart in morphologically rich languages, the differences between the temporal systems of French and English, the origin of new temporal forms in roman languages, different interpretations associated to grammatical tense forms. In confronting theories and complex empirical data, this volume aims at revealing their explanatory force, while giving a representative survey of recent developments in the syntax and semantics of time and tense in natural languages.
