University or Organization: University of South Carolina
Rank of Job: Assistant Professor
Specialty Areas Required: Anthropological Linguistics

Description:

The Department of Anthropology seeks a PhD linguistic anthropologist
to be appointed as a tenure track Asst. Prof starting fall 2003.
Specialization and area open. Candidate will teach undergraduate and
graduate courses in linguistic and cultural anthropology, and
contribute to a department with a strong four-field focus on
inequality and Diaspora studies. We prefer candidates who couple
theory with ongoing field research involving students. The Department
of Anthropology offers a BA and MA in anthropology; a PhD program in
Anthropology is planned. The Linguistics Program (an
interdepartmental program in the College of Liberal Arts) offers the
MA and PhD in linguistics. The department also actively participates
in programs in African American, Latin American, Southern and Women s
studies, and cross-college initiatives with the School of the
Environment and School of Public Health. Candidates invited to state
how their skills and background will contribute to USC s Anthropology
Department. We anticipate that the candidate will serve as a core
faculty member in the Linguistics Program. USC is an equal

The USC Linguistics Program, with faculty in five academic departments
in the College of Liberal Arts, supports a graduate program (granting
the Ph.D. and M.A. in Linguistics, and a TEFL Certificate) and an
undergraduate minor. We currently have about 40 active students in
the graduate program, and were ranked 7th among linguistics doctoral
programs in the 2000 National Doctoral Program Survey conducted by the
National Association of Graduate-Professional Students
(http://survey.nagps.org/index.php). The program's dual emphasis on
theoretical and applied aspects of linguistics is one of its major
strengths, and the great variety of research conducted by faculty and
graduate students is a reflection of the intellectual diversity that
characterizes the program. For more information about the program,
prospective applicants are invited to explore the our website:
