Announcement: Satellite workshop at ICPhS XV in Barcelona 2003 "Intonation in language varieties - AM approaches" Sunday 3rd August 2003, Universitat de Barcelona This workshop will give researchers an opportunity to discuss and evaluate the application of Autosegmental-Metrical approaches to the intonation of language varieties. It is anticipated that focus groups for a small number of languages for which such varietal study has been undertaken will work on a number of common themes, as indicated below, both prior to and at the workshop. The morning session of the workshop will be given over to language-based guided group discussion of these and other emergent themes. The afternoon session will consist of a report-back session, a small number of invited plenary addresses on central themes, and general discussion. More details of the workshop and fuller descriptions of the themes can be obtained at: http://www.vuw.ac.nz/lals/icphs/intonation_in_varieties.html Further details (cost, etc.) will be posted to that website as they become available. Themes: * Determination of phonological categories * Systemic vs realisational differences * Intonational hierarchy * Stress * Rhythm Researchers interested in contributing to this workshop should contact Paul Warren (paul.warrenMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issuevuw.ac.nz) by February 15th 2003 at the latest, giving details of the language (and variety or varieties of that language) forming the focus of their research. - -------- Dr Paul Warren Senior Lecturer School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies Victoria University of Wellington Wellington New Zealand http://www.vuw.ac.nz/lals phone office: +64 4 463 5631 admin. assist. + 64 4 463 5600 fax +64 4 463 5604
