6th Summer School of the Swiss Linguistics Society Sociolinguistic Aspects of Language Change Bern, September 15 - 19 Since 1993 the Swiss Linguistics Society (SSG/SSL) has been organisin g a biennial Summer School on linguistic issues for Ph.D. students s. The next one is scheduled for September 15 to 19, 2003 in Bern. The general topic is: "Sociolinguistic Aspects of Language Change". Subject Framework The relationship between language variation and language change clear ly constitutes a central theme of linguistics. 2003 marks the 35th an niversary of the publication of Weinreich, Labov and Herzog's seminal article "Empirical foundations for a theory of language change", in which the newly established sociolinguistic school of thought made at tempts at systematically approaching this relationship. The approache s in the '90s brought about more in-depth analyses of this relationsh ip and led to new perspectives. New and fruitful impulses arose from research into language typology and bilingualism. Such impulses can b e integrated into sociolinguistics, but these fields in turn can bene fit from findings in sociolinguistics. Speakers Profile The SSG/SSL Summer School has invited well-known sociolinguists and r esearchers on language change. There will be six keynote speakers: Pe ter Auer (Universitt Freiburg), Gaetano Berruto (Universit di T orino), Penelope Eckert (Stanford University), Franoise Gadet (Uni versit de Paris X), Paul Kerswill (University of Reading), April McMachon (University of Sheffield). Participants Profile The Summer School is open for students working towards their Ph.D. in linguistics or similar disciplines at Swiss universities. Applicatio ns for admission should be accompanied by a summary of the Ph.D. diss ertation (project) and a letter of reference from the supervisor of t he dissertation. The topic of the dissertation need not be the same a s the theme of the summer school. On condition that the Suisse National Research Foundation gives its c onsent, no contributions are required for participation. Successful a pplicants will be reimbursed for travel costs, accommodation and meal s. Ph.D. students from abroad may also apply. However, they will have to pay the costs themselves. For such students the same requirements ho ld true: all applications must be accompanied by a summary of the dis sertation research project and a reference from the supervisor of the ir dissertation. Students requiring support to meet costs should submit a formal reque st (stating specific reasons) to the SSG/SSL. Post-doctoral students are invited to apply as well as any other inte rested parties, especially members of SSG/SSL, who are welcome to att end provided there is enough space. However, these individuals must c over costs themselves. Application deadline is January 31, 2003. Paulo belonging to the corpus NILC/So Carlos, compiled by Ncleo Interinstitucional de Lingstica computacional (NILC). http://acdc.linguateca.pt/cetenfolha (To get it it is enough to register in the form at the botom of the above Webpage.) We are grateful to NILC and the newspaper for giving us permission. We also use this opportunity to inform that the resource centre that the Computational Processing of Portuguese project has been slowly building has now the name Linguateca, with corresponding URLs. We will try to migrate to this new namespace with minimal inconvenience to users. Dear Colleagues and Friends, I am delighted to be able to tell you--although perhaps many of you have already heard--that my colleague here at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Dan Jurafsky, has been awarded a MacArthur Fellowship (the so-called "genius" award). The fellwship is tremendous acknowledgement of the creativity and importance of Dan's work. We also think it is recognition of what a kind, generous, giving and just plain great person he is.
