The conference will explore emerging trends of application of methods and concepts of linguistics to actual communication and management problems in corporate settings. THEME The conference addresses the issue of the possibilities of application, and more generally, of the professional value of findings, methods and skills resulting from linguistic research. It will take into account results from various subfields of linguistics from and will consider their application in professional settings, with particular reference to the corporate sector. The conference focuses on two main areas where results of linguistic research can be relevant for professional settings: the first is the vast field of computer mediated communication (CMC), the second is the smaller, but strategic, area of interlinguistic and intercultural communication. The aim of the conference is, on the one hand, to increase the awareness of both linguists and industry, and, on the other, to present particular lines of linguistic research that lend themselves to interesting applications in these fields. PUBLICATION : The two journals Document Design (http://let.kub.nl/docdes/) and Studies in Communication Sciences (http://www.scoms.ch/) will publish a wide selection of the conference papers. Other papers might be published in special thematic volumes. CALL FOR SHORT COMMUNICATIONS & POSTERS Ph.D. students and young researchers are invited to submit short abstracts for combined poster presentations/ short communications on any topic related to the relationship between linguistics and the use of ICT, with particular regard to professional and corporate contexts. The range of potential topics is very broad and includes, for instance: - From Text Analysis and Information Extraction to Document Management and Knowledge Management - Machine Translation and multilingual communication; - Linguistic aspects of the Semantic Web; - Language and dialogue in Multi-Agent Systems; - Linguistics and discourse analysis in Document Design; - Linguistics and discourse analysis in Hypermedia and Web Design; - Linguistic approaches to Human Computer Interaction and Computer Supported Collaborative Work; - Linguistics and E-learning. - Pragmatics and dialogue analysis in user modelling. Abstracts should be maximally 1 page long and should be submitted before October 31. Only electronic submission is possible (.doc, .rtf, .pdf or .ps format) to be sent to pavia.lugano
unipv.it . Authors will receive notification of acceptance by November 10. On acceptance, in addition to the poster presentation, authors will be given the possibility of a short (10-15 minute) presentation of their work and will be invited to submit a short paper. After a review process carried out by scientific committee and invited speakers, a selection of short papers will be published in the international journal ''Studies in Communication Sciences'' (http://www.scoms.ch). VENUE The two universities hosting the joint conference are located respectively in Pavia, a historical city south-west of Milan on the lower course of the river Ticino, and Lugano a lakeside resort in the Italian speaking Canton Ticino, in the southernmost part of Switzerland. The conference sessions will take place at the University of Pavia (Italy) November 28 and 29 (morning), and at the University of Lugano (Switzerland) November 29 (afternoon) and 30. The conference will organize a transfer by coach from Pavia to Lugano the 29, which will be available at an additional cost.
