Box 9515 Leiden 2300 RZ The Netherlands The Research School of Asian, African and Amerindian Studies (CNWS) seeks candidates for two linguistic research positions (postdoc and/or PhD candidate; the PhD position is posted separately) in the "Vernieuwingsimpuls" project "Linguistic Variation in Eastern Indonesia and East Timor", funded by NWO and the University of Leiden. This research project focuses on the documentation of four endangered languages of East Timor, two of which belong to the Austronesian family, while the other two are allegedly "Papuan". The descriptive data are placed in the larger context of language contact, areal patterns, and genetic and typological variation of languages in Eastern Indonesia. For a description of the project, see www.leidenuniv.nl/interfac/cnws/linguistic_variation.htm As a Postdoc, you are expected to carry out and publish descriptive and comparative surveys of two or more East Timor languages, co-operate with the head of the project in the cross-linguistic comparison of the data, and publish on theoretical implications of the findings. The Postdoc will carry out her/his research project within the research school CNWS. Requirements: (a-c: essential, d-g: desirable) (a) PhD in linguistics (b) Ability to carry out fieldwork independently in East Timor (c) Experience in descriptive grammar writing, preferably of a language in the region (d) Field experience in Asia (preferably Indonesia or East Timor) (e) Working knowledge of Portuguese, Tetun and/or Indonesian (f) Knowledge of recent theoretical issues on language contact, change, and/or typology (g) Good publications record Appointment: Fixed term contract for 3 years. The position is available from 1 September 2002.
