Research Position in Language Processing at Sheffield (Ref PR491) Applications are invited for a Research Assistant position in the Natural Language Processing Research Group in the Department of Computer Science, University of Sheffield, to work on an EU-funded project POESIA. POESIA (Public Open-source Environment for Safer Internet Access) aims to develop an integrated Internet caching and filtering system, to enable safe and educationally appropriate Internet access. This two year, multi-site, project is funded by the EU as part of the Internet Action Plan programme. Sheffield's role in POESIA is concerned with filtering web pages, etc, on the basis of their English language text content. The approach to be developed will use natural language processing techniques to achieve enhanced filtering effectiveness. The ideal candidate for this position should have strong programming skills and a background in language processing from either a NLP, Information Retrieval or Speech Processing perspective. Knowledge of any of automated text categorisation, statistical methods and corpus processing will be an advantage. The appointment will be made on either the RA1A or RA2 pay scale, and should start as soon as an appointment can be made.
